Upcoming STARS Events

Teens age 12-18 with Down syndrome are welcome to sign up for these events. There is no charge for these events during the school year. Click here  to make sure your child is signed up.   

Upcoming events for March, April, May 2019. Registration opens February 1st at 8am! Check back regularly. More will be posted for May as they are scheduled.

Yoga @ DSG Office

Tierney Thompson will be here to teach us some Yoga. She will be opening an adaptive Yoga class in March, so come check her out and see if this is something your teen might be interested in on a regular basis.

Transition Bootcamp: Transition Planning and Self Determination @ DSG Office

Parents and Teens will meet at DSG for a night of self-advocacy and transition planning. Teens will work with volunteers and staff to discover their strengths and new things about themselves, while parents learn the importance of transition planning. This is a rescheduled event from January. Those of you that were signed up for that, were automatically signed up for this class and you received an email in January informing you. Email julie@kcdsg.org if you are unsure if you are signed up.

STARS Topeka Healthy Cooking Class @ TARC  

Join STARS friends in the Topeka/Lawrence area for a night of Healthy Cooking in the TARC kitchens. Teens will learn the importance of healthy balance, enjoy a nice dinner, and learn some safe ways to cook a meal for their family. Spots in the van from DSG available for those needing a ride from Kansas City.

Apple Pie Painting @ DSG 

Apple Pie Painting will be here to bring out your creative side! We will be doing a Royals art piece to get us ready for baseball season! Everything is supplied, you need to only bring yourself! Those who were signed up for this in January are still signed up for this class since it was cancelled due to snow and ice. If you are unsure, email julie@kcdsg.org so you dont sign up twice.

Soccer Skills and Fun @ The Soccer Lot (2525 Jefferson Street, KCMO 64108-near Union Station and the Roasterie big airplane off Hwy 35)

A new soccer venue right near Union Station has opened up and they want to have DSG come out and play! Teens will be able to learn some new soccer skills, practice their existing skills, or just have fun while getting some physical fitness!

Transition Bootcamp Apartment Tours @ DSG Office and The Mission Project Apartments  

Teens will get to tour apartments of individuals with Down syndrome living on their own. They will get to ask questions about what its like to live on your own and get a visual for what that might be like. Parents will get information about planning for community living and guardianship and be able to ask questions on those topics.

Cookie Decorating 101 @ DSG 

Teens will get to explore the employment world of Cookie Decorating. Many of our teens enjoy baking and have expressed interest in wanting to work in that field. This will give teens the opportunity to explore their interests and build on those skills. Rachel worked with us about a year ago right before Christmas to decorate cookies.

STARS Lawrence Movie Night @ Union Pacific Depot Lawrence, KS

Let's get together with friends and have a movie night at the Depot! Bring a blanket, pillow, or special bean bag and have some fun as we watch a fun movie and enjoy each other company.

Board and Brush in Lenexa, KS (13970 Santa Fe Trail Dr.)

This has been one of our most popular events in the past, so we keep bringing it back. Teens will get a chance to create a unique wooden sign, complete with decoration of their choice. These are very high quality, personalized signs. Teens will distress them with hammers (loud, but they provide ear plugs), stain them (strong smell), and paint them. Teens will use stencils so these are very nice pieces to hang in your home. Only 32 spots available. Sign up quick!

Taste Buds Kitchen in Leawood, KS

Taste Buds Kitchen will teach teens how to make great dishes and be safe in the kitchen. Teens will go through a cooking class and have fun learning new recipes and enoying some food. Teens will eat during this event. Limited space, so sign up early!

Email Julie@kcdsg.org if interested. This is a rescheduled event from February and those who were signed up will remain on the list. A waitlist is currently open and you can be added if you email Julie.

STARS Lee's Summit: TBD @ Rotary Youth Camp

 

This will conclude our FREE Wednesday night events until the end of August. Those wishing to participate in events throughout the summer can register at the link below. Events will take place on Tuesdays 1-4pm and Fridays 9am-12pm throughout the summer. There is $125 fee for this summer camp, not to be confused with the overnight camp which is just the week of June 24-28th.
