Frequently Asked Questions...

What is STARS?
STARS stands for Special Teens Achieving Real Success and is for teens ages 12 to 18 with Down syndrome.  Sessions are run by Lindsey Lipsky, MEd along with DSG Staff, PRNs, and Volunteers who work with teens on social, prevocational, and community building skills within a relaxed and supportive environment. STARS usually meets once weekly, with higher frequency during winter, spring and summer breaks. Take a look at our Facebook Page for more info!

How do I start?
Once your child with Down syndrome turns twelve, they are welcome to begin attending STARS event sessions. New to STARS? Please fill out the STARS Intake Form and email it to LindseyL@kcdsg.org. Then check out our Upcoming Events and register for an event online!

How much does it cost?
The Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City covers the cost of STARS events and activities. To donate to this special program, please click here.

Who can particpate?
Teens who have Down syndrome between the ages of 12 -18.  Teens may attend until they turn 19.

Do parents stay during the events?
All STARS events are a "No-Parent Zone" unless otherwise stated. This helps encourage independance and social skills development amongst teens. DSG provides plenty of support staff and volunteers to help with each event, and this allows the teens to hang out with their friends in a comfortable and safe setting.

What if my teen has their own paid support staff?
Teens who may need extra support are welcome to bring Support Staff to STARS events.  Please register Support Staff when RSVPing for your teen.

Do I need to RSVP to events or can my teen show up?
You must register your teen monthly events. Since spaces are limited, we cannot accept your teen without an RSVP. Please visit http://www.kcdsg.org/STARSevents to register.

Is there food provided during these events?
The calendars denote if lunch, dinner or snacks are provided during our events. During the school year, we often provide snacks and refreshments, however, it is usually a good idea to have dinner before events unless dinner is expressly provided.

How long are events?
During the school year, events are typically held Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00pm. During winter, spring break, or summer, camp events are held during the day for three hours.  Please check the event page for accurate start and end times.
